Japan
17 to 27 August 2026 | Tokyo and Kamakura
On 17 August 2026, the SAF Central Band arrived in Tokyo, marking the start of our concert tour to commemorate 60 years of friendship between Singapore and Japan. Our first engagement brought us together with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) Central Band—first in the rehearsal room, and then on stage at Parthenon Tama. Beyond preparing the music, the past few days gave musicians from both bands the opportunity to exchange ideas, learn from one another, and build friendships through our shared craft.
The second leg of our Japan tour brought two meaningful engagements as we rounded off our SJ60 journey! On 23 August 2026, the SAF Central Band performed at the 61st Singapore National Day Reception in Tokyo, held in conjunction with the Republic of Singapore Navy’s Formidable-class frigate RSS Steadfast making a port call at the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal.
This occasion marked the first time the Singapore Embassy in Tokyo, the Republic of Singapore Navy, and the SAF Central Band came together to celebrate National Day in Japan. It was a special opportunity to connect with the overseas Singaporean community and commemorate the occasion together! We then joined the students of the Kanagawa University Symphonic Band for rehearsals ahead of our Joint Concert on 25 August 2026 at the Kamakura Performing Arts Centre. Their energy and musicianship made the collaboration especially rewarding, with plenty of exchange and learning on both sides.
From engaging fellow Singaporeans to making music with our Japanese friends, these final engagements were a fitting close to a memorable tour commemorating 60 years of Singapore–Japan relations!
