Training & professional development
11. What kind of training do new musicians undergo?
All new musicians must attend the Basic Military Musician Course, where they receive training in military skills and musicianship, including practical tuition, music theory, aural skills, and drills. The Military Musician badge is awarded only upon passing a series of stringent assessments.
12. Will instruments be provided?
The SAF Band maintains a comprehensive inventory of professional-quality instruments to support performance and ceremonial requirements. For all official parades and state ceremonies, instruments will be issued to ensure standardisation and operational readiness. That said, Military Musicians are expected to own and maintain their personal professional concert instrument, previously acquired for their own musical development and training. This personal instrument remains essential for daily practice, auditions, and artistic growth.
When the band undertakes new instrument acquisitions, Military Musicians may be consulted to ensure that the selected models align with the performance standards and requirements of each section.
13. What is a typical day like as a Military Musician in the SAF Central Band?
A typical day as a Military Musician in the SAF Central Band involves a balance of musical, administrative, and military responsibilities. Military Musicians may begin their day with scheduled physical training to maintain operational fitness and readiness, followed by rehearsals, individual practice, or ensemble sessions in preparation for upcoming performances or functions.
Beyond musical duties, musicians also take on administrative appointments within the band which contribute to the band’s self-sufficiency and smooth functioning. This structured yet dynamic routine supports the continuous development of musical excellence, professional discipline, and leadership in every Military Musician.

Many of our Military Musicians are regularly called upon by professional wind bands, orchestras, educational institutions, and arts organisations both locally and abroad for freelance, pedagogical, and/or collaborative work. Such external engagements are encouraged and permitted as part of continued professional development, provided they do not conflict with official duties or affect the Military Musician’s performance and commitments as a full-time member of the SAF Central Band.
